What the client wants from family, friends, job, school, therapist, and, most importantly, from himself or herself;
What the client has been doing, thinking, and feeling about himself or herself and, his or her wants and goals and about the people around him or her; and
Whether the client’s wants are attainable and whether his or her actions, thinking, and feelings are helpful (self-evaluation).
Other tools for maintaining a quality relationship include appropriate silence, accurate empathy, and the creation of a sense of anticipation. From the very beginning of the relationship, clients realize that something is going to happen, that this therapy is not mere talk. It is action centered. They come to realize that the therapist believes that problems are in the past and solutions are in the present. The therapist communicates this belief through the language and grammar used. For example, “You had this problem in the past. Would you now want to choose to leave it there and to replace it with something better?” The endless discussion of their personal history or issues over which they have no control only serves to keep them anchored in a condition of stagnation.
Establishing the therapeutic alliance, the connection between therapist and client, proceeds at a different pace with each person. Some clients feel instant rapport with a reality therapist, while others require more proof that the helper is truly a helper. For example, a hostile client of a lower economic level group might initially perceive a middle economic level therapist as part of the oppressive system preventing him or her (the client) from achieving freedom and independence. Consequently, building trust can be an arduous and even painful task.
